I have always been drawn to the way color impacts our lives, specifically interested in color theory. I am also fascinated by Irving Penn and Richard Avedon’s editorial work. For my investigation, I was inspired to bring multiple artistic worlds together to investigate how color and graphic design compliment fashion photography and represent ideas in relation to human interaction and characterization.
I originally thought my project would simply be an investigation of color and graphic design, but I later realized that my work addressed issues such as mental health, identity, gender roles, and problems within the fashion world. Also, to expand my color knowledge I researched the work of color experts Andy Warhol and Keith Haring and the pop art movement. Additionally, halfway into my project I read The Secret Lives of Color by Kassia St. Clair, a book on color theory. After further learning about the way colors interact, I revisited some of my first pieces and introduced new colors into the designs.
